Marginalized Identities
Marginalized Identity Focused Therapy in New York (Online & In-Person)
You feel lonely and on edge at work most days. If it’s not being stereotyped, it’s hiding who you are from other people because you know they won’t understand. You’ve had too many times when you dealt with other people’s bigotry, and you’re tired.
You’re worried about losing your job and your physical safety, so you swallow down your anger. This happens while traveling, interacting with the police, and commuting home. You have to be on guard at all times. You feel trapped.
There’s a way out…
You have to numb yourself to get through the day. You hardly notice the physical pain in your body these days. And your thoughts just won’t stop. It’s a constant stream of worry, thinking you’re not doing anything right and just not good enough. But you want to feel better. You want to feel connected to yourself and others again. You wonder, “Is there anyone who can understand how painful it’s been to live in a world surrounded by people who don’t believe I’m worthy of love, care, affection, respect, or human decency?”
We believe in you and your inherent worth.
We’re Meadow Therapy, and we’re anti-oppression therapists. Whether you are a Black, Indigenous, or Person of Color, LGBTQIA+, Trans/Gender Non-Conforming, are in an ethically non-monogamous relationship, identify with various kink/BDSM/sex work communities, are fat/larger-bodied, have a history of addiction or self-harming…essentially any identity that has been oppressed, shamed or marginalized…identity-affirming therapy can help you process through the harms that have been part of your life as a result of others’ ignorance.
We will work together to help you move toward self-affirmation and self-respect and let go of any internalized self-hatred or self-loathing. Through an anti-racist, identity-affirming, shame-reduction model of therapy, we will work together to look at each of your identities and see how society and our communities have shaped your understanding of self and how oppression manifests in physical, emotional, and mental harm. We find it essential in therapy to openly discuss how our therapists’ identities come into play in the therapy relationship. This means we don’t shy away from conversations about capitalism, the mental health field, accessibility, race, gender, sexuality, size, disability/able-bodiedness, age, and any other topic that speaks to your identity.
